Secrets To Getting & Staying Motivated [Part One]

5 Secrets To Getting Motivated

FREE Actionable Worksheet Below

If there's one thing I hear on a regular basis from clients and friends alike when it comes to habit change: 'I want to ____, but I don't have enough motivation.' Sound familiar? Why is it that we so often find ourselves wanting to get healthier, lose weight, exercise more, eat cleaner, but just not wanting it enough to do something about it?

Perhaps one of the reasons is that we are afraid or failure, or crazily enough, we're afraid of success. Maybe we genuinely don't know where to start. Or could it also be that we haven't really identified why we want the change?

I want to suggest that there are 5 secrets to get your motivation levels high enough to actually do something about whatever it is you want to change. These secrets came to life for me when reading The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson - a highly recommended read! I encourage you to take a few minutes to put these 5 secrets into action. Download the Turning Dreams Into Reality Worksheet and work through these steps:

The first secret to getting motivated is having a clear sense of exactly what we want. What is your dream or goal? Just saying 'I want to be healthier' doesn't cut it. What does that actually mean? You need to get specific. Don't just leave it in your head either - to make it real, you need to write it down, and give it a deadline. Here's an example: I want to do a moderately difficult hike in 6 months time overseas, and I want to be able to complete it without killing myself (aka have a reasonably high fitness level by that time). Therefore I plan to exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes 6+ times a week between now and then. Now, that's specific.

If you know your why, you can bear almost any how

Secret number two is tapping into the reason why you want this goal so much. What is your why? Really dig deep on this one. This will be different for everyone, however one thing must be the same: it must come from a place of passion. What do you want from this more than anything else? Why is it that you want to lose weight? Or eat better? The more you can connect emotionally with the reason for your goal, and identify the benefits of achieving it, the more likely you will stick to it. Following on with the example: the reason I want to do this hike is to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience with my partner, feel fit and energetic and conquer something difficult to achieve.

The third secret to get motivated is to identify the price you will have to pay in order for your dream to become reality. What will you need to sacrifice? Being aware from the start will make it easier when it comes to the crunch. Back to the example, if I need to exercise 30+ minutes a day, I need to schedule it in my diary, make it a higher priority than some other time-consuming things (like watching Outlander), and go to be early enough that I can get up early to exercise before work.

Secret number four is to have a plan to start. The plan of action will change over time, but you need something to get you started. The process continued learning is to learn what you need to do, do it, then adjust as you go and improve the plan as you closer to your goal. An example of this for the hiking goal would be that I'm going to begin by just doing any form of exercise for 30 minutes a day, as long as my heart rate gets above 70% of its maximum for 80% of the time. I will re-assess after several weeks and get more specific with the type of exercise and intensity.

The fifth secret is to create a simple daily discipline that as you consistently do it every day, will compound over time and move you closer and closer to reaching the goal. This could mean that, take the hiking goal again for example, even if I somehow miss my 30-minute exercise window, I will commit to do 5 minutes of high intensity exercise before I shower and go to bed no matter what (we all have 5 minutes, right).

So, what are you waiting for? Did a goal or dream pop up in your mind as you were reading these secrets? Maybe it's one that you've thought about for a while, but just haven't acted on yet.
